Time with God

This morning I was thinking about God. I was reflecting on why I am writing this blog. It all boils down to helping others understand that God is knowable, accessible, but it takes time.
We have to put in the time to get to know Him. He wants to be known by you, but he doesn’t just reveal all of his secrets when you take a few minutes to talk with him. He isn’t like a teenager that when they get together they talk and talk about everything under the sun.

God wants to know you really desire to know who He really is. He doesn’t make it easy for us. We have to search, seek and desire to connect with him in a new way. He rewards us with intimacy, and special secrets that are meant for us alone. Does that sound elitist? It isn’t.

God is not a simple person. We as humans have different facets of our personality. We don’t share all that we are to each person. Each of our friends knows us a little different. Part of that is because of experiences we share, part of it is shared interests, part of it is how much we trust someone with our inner self. It’s the same with God. Only he isn’t as simple as a human is, not that we are simple. Now multiply the complexity of humans by a billion. Now you are starting to see that God is so multi dimensional that as a human we could never contain the full knowledge of who he is. Even the Angels around the throne room continually declare HOLY each time he reveals another aspect of who he is.

One thing I can tell you is that as a young Christian, I had been taught many things that weren’t true. I had expectations based on those teachings. People would tell me that God wouldn’t do a this or a that. People even said He Had to respond to certain things in a certain way. When God didn’t perform according to my expectations, I would be disappointed but even more tragically I would get ANGRY. I believed thoughts that he must not love me if he wasn’t going to do what I had been taught he would do. These were painful learning experiences. It took time for me to understand that God isn’t a magic genie that you can pull out of your pocket and make perform according to my wishes. It wasn’t his fault that I hadn’t taken the time to get to know who He really is.

I want to encourage you that when you feel disappointed by God, that it isn’t because he loves you less or doesn’t want you to know him. It is because he won’t reinforce false teaching of his character and identity. He wants you to know him and he invites you on the journey of discovery. He will lead you in unexpected ways and you will be rewarded with a rich relationship with God that you will treasure. So take the time to get to know Him as he really is, you will not be sorry you invested your time with Him.
